The Bagrationi (sometimes Hellenized as Bagratid) dynasty was the ruling dynasty of Georgia for over a millennium. This dynasty was founded during the Middle Ages and ruled the country until the early part of the 19th century, when its last king was overthrown by the Russians.
Bagrat III was the first king of a politically unified Georgia designated "Sakartvelo". The term "Sakartvelo" would literally mean "all-Georgian kingdom", "all Georgia" or "whole Georgia". Sakartvelo is still used in modern times as the official name of the country. Queen Tamar was the first female monarch ( mepe) of Georgia.
Upon his father's death on 7 May 1014, he inherited the kingdoms of Abkhazia, Kartli and Kakheti united into a single state of Georgia. As his predecessor, Giorgi continued to be titled as King of the Abkhazians ( Ap'xaz) and Georgians ( K'art'velians ).
This dynasty was founded during the Middle Ages and ruled the country until the early part of the 19th century, when its last king was overthrown by the Russians. Nevertheless, this was not the end of the Georgian royal house, as its members became prominent aristocrats in the Russian Empire.
